Trickle Down Economics and Pigskin Prognostication: LSU at Alabama

by Darren Carter - "Big_Fan" A Look Back Last week we trashed bye.  The previous week we got by trash.  Enough said. The Game For the past two seasons, the buildup to the LSU game has been almost unbearable, as the conflated conflict between Nick Saban and the LSU nation has gotten more attention ...

‘Bama-LSU, USC-ASU, and the Rest of the Week 10 College Football Preview

It doesn't matter who your team is, Aaron Torres has you covered. To read this article in its entirety, including his thoughts on Penn State-Ohio State, Navy-Notre Dame, and Cincinnati-UConn, please click here , or visit him at www.aarontorres-sports.com South Carolina (plus-seven) over ARKANSAS: 12:20 Was it just me, or did it seem like every time you turned on the South Carolina-Tennessee game last weekend, Stephen Garcia was slowly walking off the field, ripping off his helmet with one of... those crazed, “If those fat f---s don’t start blocking for me, I’m going to kill one of them,” looks in his eyes. I swear I saw that happen at least 15 times last Saturday. Anyways, with South Carolina in the midst of their annual free fall, it’d be easy to just take the Hogs at home and move on. But here’s the thing: Do you know that South Carolina hasn’t allowed a quarterback to throw for more than 160 yards since Week Three against Florida Atlantic? Granted, Jevan Snead, Mike Hartline, Greg McElroy, and Jonathan Crompton aren’t Ryan Mallett, but that’s still a pretty good overall body of work. Factor that in with Arkansas’ inability to tackle (27 points against Eastern Michigan last weekend? Really? Really?), and I think we might have ourselves a lot closer ballgame than anyone’s anticipating.   Oregon (minus-seven) over STANFORD: 3:30 p.m. I mean, I guess I understand why this line is so low: Oregon’s coming off a big win; they’re going on the road; Stanford’s coming off a bye, and it’s an early kickoff. But just seven points, really? Was I the only one that saw Oregon’s offense roll up 613 yards last weekend, and turn the USC game into an And One mix tape? Games like this are why I need my own ESPN stats team. There’s got to be some wacky stat Vegas knows that’s pushing this line so low, right? Something like, “Stanford is 11-2 since 2001 when facing quarterbacks named Jeremiah,” or “Jim Harbaugh has never lost a 3:30 kickoff against an Oregon school, coming off a bye week.” Unfortunately, until I get that stats team I’m going to have stick with my guns. And because of it, I like Oregon to cover.   LSU (plus-seven-and-a-half) over Alabama: 3:30 p.m. Whenever I’m having a really hard time deciding on a game, I always ask myself, “What direction would Beano Cook go,” and then run the opposite way. Just kidding. What I seriously do though, is lay out all the questions that I have on each team, to better evaluate the situation. For LSU, here are my questions. Is Jordan Jefferson ready to go into Bryant-Denny Stadium and get a win? Why doesn’t LSU use Charles Scott more? Will they Saturday? Do the Tigers have some kind of contractual agreement with Russell Sheppard on touches? Because there just doesn’t appear to be any rhyme, reason, or consistency to how they use him. And finally, as good as LSU has looked the last two weeks, did beating up on Auburn, and Tulane really help them get ready for this game? For Alabama, it’s much simpler. The Tide said they needed last week’s bye to rest both physically, and mentally. Was that the truth, or an excuse? And most importantly, is Greg McElroy going to figure “it” out in time for Saturday? In the end, I have more questions about LSU, but also have a clearer picture of the Tigers than I do of Alabama, after their wins the last two weeks. Put it all together, and I’m still going to take the Tide to win, but in a squeaker. Luckily, I don’t think Nick Saban, his players, and most Alabama fans care about point spreads, as long as they get to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game. That won’t be a problem after Saturday.   ARIZONA STATE (plus-10) over USC: 8:00 p.m. For selfish reasons I want USC to blow Arizona State out. Mainly that I have a bunch of friends going to this game, and if I can’t be there with them, well, I hope it’s lousy. What can I say, that’s just the kind of friend I am. But anyways, after thinking about this one for awhile, here are three reasons this one stays close: 1. Arizona State’s defense is waaaaaaay better than people realize (25th in scoring defense, fourth in rushing defense in all of college football). 2. At this point, the guys on USC’s injured list (Stafon Johnson, Armond Armstead, Anthony McCoy etc.), might actually be able to beat the guys who’ll be on the field for the Trojans Saturday. You know, if they were healthy. 3. Matt Barkley just isn’t that good. There I said it. His numbers may be ok, but after watching him every week, I’m convinced that if his name were Craig Johnson, and he didn’t look like an Abercrombie model, we wouldn’t be nearly as enamored with him. In time, he’s going to be really good, but he’s not there yet.   Oklahoma (minus-seven) over NEBRASKA: 8:00 p.m. I like Bo Pelini, and think he’ll eventually get Nebraska back to the top of the Big XII North (emphasis on eventually). But after watching the Cornhuskers last weekend, I’m going steal a phrase from 1999, and say that the Nebraska’s offense is U-G-L-Y (Oh you better believe I went there). I don’t care who the quarterback is, unless your whole team has swine flu, or is shaving points (and to the best of my knowledge neither scenario happened last weekend) there is no excuse to only get 273 yards of offense, and 11 first downs against Baylor. None. Oklahoma in this one, big.   (To read the REMAINDER of this article, please click here , or visit Aaron at www.aarontorres-sports.com ) Read more Alabama Crimson Tide Football news on BleacherReport.commore>>

Game previews

Outside the Sidelines, over at RollBamaRoll.com, has an awesome preview of tomorrow's game against LSU up on the page. Guy is a genious when it comes to football, and if you want to know what to watch for tomorrow, please check this out. Great reading.Dennis Dodd, who is known for writing about subjects that he doesn't know ANYTHING about, tries his hand at why Julio Jones has not been successful for Alabama this year. Read up on it here. Best quote comes from Coach Saban who told Julio,... while he was recruiting him, that "we're going to win, with or without you." God, that's awesome. Our boys at "And the Valley Shook" have a great write up about how the LSU obsession with Saban needs to stop.Roy Exum, from the Chattanoogan, has picked Bama biiiiig in this game. "No. 9 LSU (7-1) at No. 3 ALABAMA (7-0), 3:30 p.m. (CBS) -- So now we come to the "the real game of the year." Alabama will try to put the Dec. 5 "dance" (SEC championship game) on ice while LSU is eying the BCS rankings. LSU fans have been crowing all week that Les Miles has one more win than Nick Saban in the same time frame while wearing the LSU's head coaches' hat, but neither Les or Nick will play tomorrow. Alabama, idle since the UT fright, is an 8-point pick and the guess here is that it will be more than that. The Tide realized 'Bama was now merely mortal against UT and Saban is a master at fine-tweaking a powerful engine. UA has Miss. State and Chattanooga before Auburn (there) while LSU faces La. Tech, Ole Miss and Arkansas this month. MY PICK: Alabama 34-14."Phil Steele is looking at a 27-10 Bama win. Read his preview here. So, for the picks, I was 2-3 last week. Not too good, but not winless either. How bout we try our hand again this week.Illinois at Minnesota (-6.5)--- We're getting good line value with Illinois this week because of their blowout of Michigan, but they were built better to matchup against a team like Michigan. Minnesota is playing good football, and I don't believe there's anybody on Zook's team that can handle Eric Decker. I think Minnesota wins by two touchdowns here.Northwestern (+17) at Iowa--- Northwestern isn't awful, and even though Iowa's undefeated, they're not that great. They got some favorable calls last week against Indiana, and they've been more of a "cardiac kids" type of team - winning games in the 4th quarter, and games that are closer than they really should be. I think this is another one. I could see Iowa winning, but I'm talking 10-14 points, not 17.Kansas at Kansas St (+2.5)--- Kansas St has been playing really good football lately, and Kansas has lost 3 in a row. Not to mention Kansas St is 5-3 against the spread, while Kansas is an abysmal 2-5 against the number. I don't have any faith in Mangino to go in and win in Manhattan against Bill Snyder, who has this team clicking and still striving for a Big 12 North division championship.Rice at SMU (-17.5)--- Rice has been absolutely abysmal. I mean horrendous. Pitiful. Ridiculously bad. Like, worst football I've seen in a long time. They're 1-6-1 against the spread this year, while SMU has been 5-2. June Jones has his offense rolling, and they're coming off a win at Tulsa. SMU's defense has been pretty good (anybody that holds Tulsa to 13 points ain't bad), and Rice has been giving up HUGE numbers to just about everybody they play. SMU wins by 4 touchdowns, easy. Duke (+10) at North Carolina--- Duke has won 3 straight ACC games, and they control their own destiny in the ACC Coastal division. North Carolina has lost 3 of their last 4 ACC games, but they're coming off a win at Virginia Tech last Thursday night, which, I believe, is giving us GREAT line value. And I do mean great. I think David Cutcliffe has got this team playing excellent football, and I don't think that Butch Davis has his kids gelling. VaTech gave away the game to UNC last week. Duke won't do that. Not to mention, Duke is 4-1-1 against the spread, and UNC is 3-4. And if you want even more, this matchup, since 2004, has been decided by an average of 4.5 points per game. 10 points is waaay too much, and I actually think Duke will win this one straight up.more>>

Maybe LSU Fans Should Try Telemarketing With Greg McElroy

On the heels of acquiring Tim Tebow's phone number in 2007 , taking Knowshon Moreno and AJ Green's numbers in 2008 , snagging John Parker Wilson's digits last year , and getting in touch with backup John Brantley this year , LSU fans are trying the same trick with Alabama's Greg McElroy , seemingly.

LSU Vs Alabama College Football Picks

This weekend, one of the biggest games of the season will take place between SEC powerhouses. The 7-1 LSU Tigers will square off with the 8-0 Alabama Crimson Tide with National Title implications. If you are looking for Free College Football Picks whoever wins this one could face Florida in the conference championship and earn a spot in the National Championship game. This game is huge and it should be watched if you are a college football fan. The SEC has shaped up to be a three team race now... that only Florida, Alabama, and LSU remain in the top 25. Florida leads the east division of the SEC easily and LSU and Alabama are neck and neck in the West. Nick Saban will have his Crimson tide ready to play for this one. They bring in one of the most talented rosters in college football. Many people believe that they should be the No. 1 team in the country and they’ve played great so far. Running back Mark Ingram is one of the best in the country and quarterback Greg McElroy has been great. Their defense is one of the best in the country and LSU will have their hands full trying to pass or run against them. For LSU, Les Miles is also not one to shy away from big games. His team has played pretty well all season with the one exception being the loss to the Florida Gators. In that big game, they let Tim Tebow and the Florida defense shut them down. As far as winning college football picks go they are hoping for a better output on offense this week as they only scored three points against the Gators. The Tiger players have been looking forward to this game for redemption ever since they lost to the Gators. Expect a great game in the SEC in this one. Either team could walk away with the inside track to the SEC Championship game.   Check out Vernon Croy’s Expert College Football Picks on this game.Read more Alabama Crimson Tide Football news on BleacherReport.commore>>

Heisman Banter : Who’s The Legit Front-Runner?

The College Football season is drawing to a close, Bowl match-ups are becoming clearer week by week, but what about the Heisman Trophy? There's a handful of names that are vying for College Football's most coveted honor, but who's in the driver's seat with just over a month left? Sam Bradford, the 2008 winner, has endured unfortunate injuries this year that have slighted his career and efforts to repeat at the Heisman Trophy winner. Sam was a preseason favorite, but the shoulder injury... withdrew his name from the list of Heisman hopefuls. Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, and Mark Ingram have all had their names thrown into the mix by the college football media in the last three or four weeks. Is it safe to say that one of these big name players from big name schools are a lock to win? Or do guys like Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen have a chance? What about Houston's stud quarterback Casey Keenum? Alabama's Mark Ingram is gaining ground every Saturday, is he even on the radar? Each one of the fore-mentioned players are in the top five in most polls/rankings, but I'll take the time to rank each one according to statisitics, quality of team, and overall performances.
